Greece’s plan to establish a UAV base in Rhodes would “violate the island’s demilitarized status and harm peace and stability in the Aegean, as well as good neighborly relations,” Turkey’s Defense Ministry said Thursday.
The ministry said that “any attempt to violate this regime is incompatible with Greece’s obligations under international law.” It also said Turkey “will continue to resolutely protect its rights and interests, deriving from international treaties.”
At the same time, the Turkish Defense Ministry welcomed a decision by the Greek government to move Patriot air defense systems from Karpathos to Crete, calling it a positive step toward “reversing the island’s militarization in violation of international treaties.”
“As Turkey, we will continue to support all constructive steps that contribute to strengthening peace and stability in our region and that comply with international law and treaty obligations,” the statement concludes.
