Greece is about to send a stern message to Ukraine that it should withdraw all its drones from the country’s coasts.

This warning does not signify a change in policy, Greek officials say; as it has since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, Greece has steadfastly supported Ukraine on the basis of the principle of territorial inviolability.

Faced with its nominal ally Turkey’s own territorial claims in the Aegean Sea, Greece is against the forceful change of borders under any circumstances.

After an unmanned surface vehicle (USV), or sea drone, was found by fishermen of the western Greek island of Lefkada, it was salvaged and sent to a naval base near Athens for examination.

Well-informed sources told Kathimerini that the Mamai type USV (trade name: Cossack Mamai), built specifically for kamikaze missions, is just one of many of its type operating in the Eastern Mediterranean.
