One of South Africa's popular e-hailing platforms, Bolt, has announced that it is taking its compliance drive nationwide as provinces grapple with thousands of outstanding operating licence applications.
The move comes as e-hailing operators face stricter requirements under South Africa’s new transport laws, which require them to obtain operating licences and meet safety standards.
Platforms that allow unlicensed operators to use their apps risk fines of up to R100,000 or up to two years in prison, while e-hailing vehicles are also required to have panic buttons and meet other compliance requirements.
The company was the first major e-hailing platform to receive a Certificate of Registration from the National Public Transport Regulator earlier this year.
