Fenerbahce are heading to the Champions League league phase, and Lyon are heading to the Europa League. The Turkish club sealed a 3-1 aggregate victory over Olympique Lyonnais across two legs, punching their ticket to European football’s top table with a decisive away performance at Groupama Stadium on August 26.
How both legs unfolded
The first leg on August 18 at Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul had the feel of a chess match that neither side wanted to lose. Lyon’s Lois Openda broke the deadlock in the 40th minute, giving the French side a valuable away lead heading into the break.
That advantage lasted exactly two minutes of second-half football. Mason Greenwood equalized for Fenerbahce in the 47th minute, with Kerem Akturkoglu providing the assist. A 1-1 draw at home wasn’t the dream result for the Turkish club, but it kept the tie wide open.
The first leg also featured a notable cameo: Romelu Lukaku came off the bench to make his Fenerbahce debut.
