Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Wednesday marks the 22nd annual National Dog Day, a holiday founded in 2004 to celebrate cute canine companions of all shapes and sizes.
The holiday was founded by animal advocate and author Colleen Paige, who picked Aug. 26 because it was the date her family adopted her first dog, Sheltie, when she was 10 years old.
"National Dog Day celebrates all dogs, mixed breed and pure. Our mission is to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives, keep us safe and bring comfort," the holiday's official website states.
