Rockstar Games, the developers of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, have finally spoken out over a series of dramatic leaks.The company appeared to confirm that the “heartbreaking” leaks were legitimate and apologised to players that they had been introduced to the upcoming game through the footage.In recent days, clips and photos showing both gameplay and cutscenes from GTA 6 have appeared online, from a group calling itself Cyberleek. They showed detailed footage from inside the game and some of the videos appeared to suggest that the leakers had actual access to the game itself.In some posts, the leakers appeared to suggest that they had posted the videos as part of a protest against decisions by Rockstar, including its announcement that it would only make the game available digitally. But that was met with some skepticism because the posts were also used to promote a digital currency apparently run by the same group.Rockstar stayed silent throughout all of those repeated leaks, leading to questions about their legitimacy and how developers might respond. But the company has now apologised to players and committed to release more legitimate information soon.The leaks and the new statement come ahead of a special preview that will appear on Netflix this week, and will represent the first official extended look at the game. The highly anticipated game is due for release on 19 November, and is likely to be one of the biggest launches of the decade.“We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week. It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time,” Rockstar said in a statement.“We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has — from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.”Rockstar said it was sorry that it had taken so long to release official details and footage from the game, but that “we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve”. It said it was “unfortunate” that some parts of the game might now have been spoiled, and thanked those who had “reached out with message of support” to the developers.
