Sunderland have sent Manchester City an offer to sign Jack Grealish on a loan. The north-east club’s proposal would see City cover part of his salary and includes the possibility to make the move permanent next summer when his City contract expiresThe 30-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Everton, has come on as a second-half substitute in each of City’s first two games this season, in the Community Shield loss to Arsenal and Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Bournemouth.Sunderland’s move for Grealish is alongside the club’s pursuit of Marseille winger Igor Paixao.Personal terms for the 26-year-old Brazilian, who scored 12 goals for the Ligue 1 club last season, are not thought to be a problem, but there is not yet a club-to-club agreement. This summer, Sunderland — who will compete in this season’s Europa League — have added full-backs Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie to Regis le Bris’s squad, alongside midfielder Jules Ahoka. The Athletic reported in June that City would be open to letting Grealish leave the club either on loan or permanently this summer.City have already sold winger Savio to Tottenham Hotspur for a deal worth up to £85million, and have agreed a loan deal with an obligation for fellow forward Omar Marmoush to also join the north London club this summer.Grealish sustained a stress fracture in his foot in January which curtailed the remainder of his 2025-26 season. Up to that point, Grealish had made 22 appearances for David Moyes’ side, recording two goals and six assists.Everton had an option to buy the England international for a fee in the region of £50m ($66m), which was not taken up.Grealish joined City from Aston Villa for a club-record £100m fee in 2019, and has made a total of 159 appearances for the club.He was a regular in the 2022-23 side which won the treble of the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup, making 50 appearances that season. The following term was disrupted by injury and Grealish made just 10 Premier League starts. His role further diminished in 2024-25, starting seven league games, before he was left out of the squad completely for the final match of the season against Fulham, which then-head coach Pep Guardiola described as “nothing personal”.Grealish was subsequently omitted from City’s squad for the summer’s Club World Cup, prior to his Everton switch.Grealish came through Aston Villa’s academy and went on to become a pivotal player for the club, helping them to promotion from the Championship and establishing his side in the Premier League. He made 213 appearances for Villa, recording 32 goals and 43 assists.‘Grealish can still get fans off their seats’Analysis by Manchester City correspondent Sam LeeThe plan for City was always to move Grealish on, despite his early season appearances and the fact that the club are saying goodbye to forwards Savinho and Omar Marmoush. It was notable that Grealish never returned to City when his season was cut short by injury in February and although he and new manager Enzo Maresca have a close relationship, the winger’s time at the club has long been over.He remains an extremely popular member of the squad and is particularly close to Erling Haaland, and he showed during his loan with Everton that he can still get fans off their seats, and it is certain that news of Sunderland’s interest will excite fans in the north east.It has often been said that Grealish fell foul of Pep Guardiola’s strict positional requirements and while he can shine bright when given a free role, he always seemed more than comfortable on the left-hand side and rarely let City down on the pitch — the bigger issues came away from football and he was too often unavailable for selection.
