Modi offers assistance to Nepal PM as over 100 Indian tourists go missing in massive flash floods

New Delhi, August 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke to his Nepali counterpart Balendra Shah conveying his condolences over the loss of lives in the devastating flash floods in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, while offering all possible humanitarian assistance as rescue operations continued. More than 100 Indian tourists are among hundreds of people reported missing in the floods, officials said.At least 31 persons are feared dead and nearly 400 are missing, with the full extent of the casualties and damage still being assessed by the Nepali government.“Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal. The people of India stand in solidarity with their sisters and brothers in Nepal at this difficult time. India is ready to provide all possible humanitarian assistance to Nepal. Our teams are coordinating closely on rescue and relief efforts,” Modi said in a post on X.Sending ReliefThe flood-hit route is a key gateway to Langtang National Park and the Gosainkunda pilgrimage site, a sacred high-altitude lake that attracts thousands of devotees, particularly during the Rakshabandhan festival, which is on Friday.“India is preparing to send relief material to Nepal at the earliest, while the government is coordinating with Nepali authorities on rescue and relief operations and extending assistance to Indians affected by the floods”, an official told businessline.The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said it was in touch with the relevant Nepali authorities for the early rescue and relief of Indian nationals affected by the flash floods.Emergency ContactsThe embassy has also issued two emergency numbers for assistance and information concerning Indian nationals affected by the floods: +977 985 131 6807 and +977 970 910 7500.According to a preliminary situation report compiled by the Nepal Tourism Board, 384 travellers, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals, have been reported missing following the floods in Rasuwa.The missing include 105 Indian tourists and 37 non-resident Indians (NRIs), while others are from countries including the United States, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands and South Africa.Published on August 26, 2026
