Kiosks, corner shops and other immigrant owned businesses were shut in Magdeburg on Wednesday in protest of the policies of the Alternative for Germany, which is largely expected to win an upcoming state election in Saxony-Anhalt.
Many migrant-owned shops temporarily closed their doors in Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, on Wednesday to warn against the consequences of a far-right AfD election win next month.
"We are closing our doors today so that the doors to a free and democratic society do not close tomorrow," said the Refugee Council of Saxony-Anhalt state, which backed the initiative.
The anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD) party is leading strongly in the polls ahead of the September 6th vote and hopes to form a state government for the first time.
The party, which the German domestic security service labels "right-wing extremist", has vowed a "deportation and remigration offensive".
