An Arizona high school has suspended its football season due to a "potentially serious incident."The incident involved faculty members and members of the high school football team.Multiple faculty members have been placed on administrative leave pending a law enforcement investigation.An Arizona high school just less than 50 miles west of the Phoenix metro area will be suspending its football season until further notice, according to a statement released by the district superintendent.In a statement addressed to Saddle Mountain USD Parents and Families on Monday, Aug. 24, district superintendent Dr. Mike Winters said a report of a "potentially serious incident involving faculty members and members of the high school football team" was received by the district on Aug. 21, leading to the cancellation of Tonopah Valley's varsity football game against Odyssey Institute on Friday night, as previously reported by Richard Obert of the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network.Monday night's JV football game was also canceled and in the statement, Winters said both the varsity and JV seasons would be suspended until further notice."We understand that cancelling a football game affects our students, families, coaches and community," the statement read. "However, the safety and protection of our students must always come before athletics or any other consideration; therefore, Varsity and JV football is suspended until further notice."According to Winters’ statement, the district initiated contact with law enforcement and multiple faculty members have since been placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to the Arizona Republic that deputies took a report over a “dry humping” incident that took place during a football camp. However, no victims were willing to press charges MCSO spokesperson Dave Moyer said in an email to The Republic."Because this matter involves an active investigation and concerns students and personnel, there are limits to what the District can share at this time," the statement said. "Nevertheless, we remain committed to transparency and will provide additional information as circumstances allow and as it is appropriate to do so."USA TODAY Sports reached out to Saddle Mountain USD Superintendent Michael Winters and Tonopah Valley principal Nathan Bolden for further comment, with Winters responding saying Monday’s statement serves as their comment.According to The Republic, Odyssey was notified of the last week’s cancellation less than a half hour before it was set to make the commute along Interstate 10.Tonopah Valley was scheduled to play on the road against Scottsdale Christian on Friday, Aug. 28, but that game won't be played."We appreciate the patience and understanding of our students, families, staff, and community as this process continues...
