A Nepalese tourism official said Wednesday tourists from Lithuania were among the missing foreign nationals following devastating flash floods in the country.
“Preliminary data from tourism and travel agencies show that 384 travellers are missing in the affected areas, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepalese citizens,” the Nepal Tourism Board said, adding that authorities were working to establish the whereabouts of the travellers.
Santos Panta, director of the Nepal Tourism Board, told the dpa news agency in Kathmandu on Wednesday that most of the missing foreign tourists were from India, but that travellers from several other countries, including the United States, Spain, Lithuania and Germany, were also unaccounted for.
The flooding hit an area where the popular Langtang Valley trekking route begins, as well as other areas visited by Hindu pilgrims.
A police spokesman said earlier that authorities did not yet know the full extent of the damage, but warned people living near the river to move to safer areas.
