AWS buys DuckLabs to bring DuckDB’s embeddable analytics to more enterprises
Amazon Web Services Inc. said today it has struck an agreement to buy DuckLabs B.V., the Amsterdam-based developer behind the popular open-source analytical database, DuckDB.
The deal is expected to close as soon as next month, and will see DuckLabs’ team work with AWS to expand and scale up the capabilities of DuckDB’s data services globally.
Founded just over five years ago, DuckLabs has enjoyed tremendous success and traction with the open-source DuckDB project. Designed as an embeddable, high-performance analytical database, DuckDB makes data analysis faster, more portable and accessible to developers. It’s often referred to as the analytics equivalent of SQLite because of the way it enables developers to execute complex Structured Query Language-based queries from directly inside their applications or client environments, without needing to manage any server infrastructure.
The simplicity and efficiency of DuckDB are the two main reasons why the database has become so incredibly popular, with adoption growing to more than three million downloads per day at one point, DuckLabs said.
