Dolly Parton’s death has sparked a difficult conversation as well as tributes from across the world.

Locked inside a wooden “Dream Box” at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is an unreleased Dolly Parton recording titled My Place in History. The song was written and recorded in 2015, with instructions that it remain sealed until January 19, 2046, what would have been Parton’s 100th birthday.
Now, following Parton’s death at the age of 80 on August 25, 2026, the mysterious song has taken on an even more poignant meaning.
The country icon had always been aware that her music could outlive her. In fact, Parton deliberately planned for future generations to hear music she had recorded during her lifetime. But My Place in History was different: she chose to lock it away, knowing that she would not be able to control how the world received it decades later.
