Conflicting accounts have emerged over the reported assault of an Islamic cleric in Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto State, with sources offering different perspectives on what triggered the incident.
The various versions of the incident are currently in the public circle, making it difficult to independently establish the circumstances surrounding the reported confrontation or determine whether it had any political connection.
One version circulating on social media and among local sources claimed that some youths assaulted the imam after he allegedly used a mosque sermon to canvass support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election and advocated support for a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 election.
However, another account from sources familiar with the cleric’s activities in Sokoto suggested that the reported incident may not have been connected to partisan politics.
According to the sources, the imam is regarded in some circles as a controversial cleric who has, over time, publicly disagreed with the position of the Sultan of Sokoto as well as that of the Sokoto State Government on a number of issues.
