At least 15 infants were killed in a fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in Islamabad.

The blaze was apparently triggered by a faulty air conditioning system in the hospital's gynaecology ward.

Of 16 newborns present when the fire broke out, only one was rescued alive.

Pakistan's state-run healthcare facilities have faced repeated criticism for being under-resourced, overburdened and mismanaged.
