At least 15 infants were feared dead after a fire broke out in the gynaecology ward of Pakistan’s largest public hospital in Islamabad on Wednesday. Geo News reported that 15 babies died in the fire, but there was no official confirmation of the casualties.The fire broke out at around 7 am at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), a major public hospital in Pakistan’s capital.PIMS spokesperson Dr Aneeza Jalil told Dawn that 15 babies were in the ward when the fire started.“Some of the babies may have been discharged during the night so the exact number [of casualties] cannot be shared right now,” she said.Jalil said the fire appeared to have been caused by a short circuit. The flames had been extinguished, but the cooling process would take some time, she added.
