And this preseason top 50 is the starting point.A summer draft board is based on past tape with projection built in, which means there will be natural fluctuation in the rankings once we get new tape throughout the season. There’s also no guarantee that even the most intriguing prospects heading into September will even be part of the draft class come April. In fact, two members of last year’s preseason top 10 (Arch Manning and LaNorris Sellers) are back on this year’s board after opting to stay in school.Can the 2027 QB draft class live up to the hype?Dane Brugler and Madison EadesOver the past several weeks, my position previews ranked hundreds of draft-eligible players ahead of the 2026 season. Here, I’ve narrowed those lists down to these prospects:We are all guilty of falling into the evaluation trap of overexcitement about prospects, which leads to hyperbolic scouting statements and unattainable expectations. But the boundless praise for Smith is absolutely warranted based on his first two seasons at Ohio State.Smith is a special player and enters the 2027 NFL Draft process as the clear No. 1 prospect in a loaded class. When talking to scouts around the league, you hear lofty player comparisons, including to Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald, who are both enshrined in Canton. I have been scouting for almost two decades, and Smith has a decent chance to finish with the highest grade I have ever given to a wide receiver.Photo:Michael Reaves / Getty ImagesWRJr.With five interceptions and 12 passes defended over 10 games in 2025, Moore emerged as a consensus All-American and will enter his third season as arguably the best defensive player in college football.Moore thrives on an island. According to PFF, he lined up in man coverage on 57.6 percent of his defensive snaps in 2025, the highest rate in the FBS. He is a long, smooth athlete who processes confidently and decisively to stay a step ahead of the action. He lines up primarily outside, but he had no trouble moving inside to shadow former USC standout receiver Makai Lemon. Moore brings consistency to a position that is inherently volatile.Photo:Justin Casterline / Getty ImagesCBJr.Manning is not without flaws. However, his issues are mostly experience based, and his progress last season will encourage evaluators that continued growth is coming. Better timing with his receivers and upgrades to the depth chart (hello, Cam Coleman) also should translate to better play.Drafting a quarterback high in the NFL Draft is a substantial bet, without guarantees. But based on the promise of his tape and traits, Manning looks like the type of prospect worth the gamble. We’ll see if his 2026 tape builds on that optimism.Photo:Alex Slitz / Getty ImagesQBR-Jr.His production dipped as a sophomore (4.5 sacks in 11 starts), but Stewart was routinely disruptive despite being hampered by a back injury over the back half of 2025.Stewart thrives on his raw physical traits: explosive athleticism, bendy body length and special twitch. While he isn’t the most refined pass rusher at this point, NFL teams will be happy to bet on his upside, as his foundational traits are incredibly impressive. Stewart is a blue-chip prospect and should be one of the first players selected in the 2027 NFL Draft.Photo:Jeff Blake / Imagn ImagesEdgeJr.Frustration. That was the main takeaway when watching Coleman’s 2024 and 2025 tape, as he was regularly squandered in the Auburn offense. That shouldn’t be the case in 2026, now that he’s in a Texas offense set up to feature him as the No. 1 target for quarterback Arch Manning.In the mold of an A.J. Green type of pass catcher, Coleman has freaky ability and can be a top-10 draft pick in the 2027 draft class, if he continues to develop as a junior.Photo:Scott Wachter / Getty Images for ONITWRJr.A five-star recruit out of high school, Moore was the No. 3 quarterback (behind Manning and Nico Iamaleava) in the 2023 recruiting class and a top-five overall recruit. He was a huge get for UCLA — and started right away — but spent just one year with the Bruins. Prior to the 2024 season, Moore transferred to Oregon, where he backed up Dillon Gabriel before emerging as one of college football’s top quarterbacks.Had he declared, Moore would have been drafted very high in the 2026 NFL Draft — likely No. 2 by the New York Jets. However, he wanted one more year of college experience to continue developing mentally and physically.Photo:Ali Gradischer / Getty ImagesQBR-Jr.The No. 2 edge rusher in the 2024 recruiting class (behind Stewart), the former five-star quickly became a starter and flashed dominance during his freshman and sophomore seasons.Although he isn’t the top-ranked edge on my preseason list, Simmons is a more complete player than Stewart right now. He has the talent to supplant Stewart atop the rankings before draft weekend.Photo:Tim Warner / Getty ImagesEdgeJr.He was thrown into the fire late in 2024 because of injuries on Texas’ roster, and he started his first two games in the SEC championship game and a College Football Playoff win over Arizona State. Goosby replaced Kelvin Banks Jr. as the full-time left tackle last season and separated himself as one of the best linemen in the SEC.There were six offensive tackles drafted in the first round in April — it likely would have been seven had Goosby elected to enter the 2026 NFL Draft. But he returned to Austin for his fourth season in the program, and he now has a chance to make himself a top-10 pick and the first lineman drafted in 2027.Photo:Scott Wachter / Getty Images for ONITOTR-Jr.This is a healthy ranking for a player with only 34 career catches, but Becker was a revelation over the final two months of the 2025 season. Would the Hoosiers have secured the Big Ten title and national championship without him? Maybe, but we’ll never know for sure. Every Becker catch felt incredibly impactful during the title run — 85.3 percent of his catches in 2025 resulted in a first down or touchdown.Even with a slight decline in quarterback play, “Big Play” Becker has the talent to punch his ticket for the first round next April.Photo:Tommy Gilligan / Imagn ImagesWRJr.Pierre was a highly touted five-star recruit who stayed home to play for Alabama. He entered his redshirt sophomore season last year as a part-time role player, but he earned more playing time and emerged as arguably the Tide’s most impactful defensive player.Pierre flirted with leaving for the 2026 NFL Draft, where he likely would have been a top-40 pick. Instead, he returned to Tuscaloosa for his fourth season — and a chance to cement his status as a top-20 prospect.Photo:Sean M. Haffey / Getty ImagesEdgeR-Jr.Green finished as the No. 1 tight end in the 2024 recruiting cycle. He signed with LSU and became a two-sport athlete, also suiting up for the basketball team as a freshman.Last season, Green became a mismatch weapon for the Tigers and had seven touchdown grabs — only 2026 first-round pick Kenyon Sadiq caught more touchdowns in 2025 among FBS tight ends. Still young in football years, Green is just scratching the surface of his sky-high potential, and it will be interesting to see how much of a jump he makes this season.Photo:Carly Mackler / Getty ImagesTEJr.Every college program in the country wanted Robinson out of high school. After prepping at IMG Academy, he was the No. 2 recruit in the 2024 class (behind only Smith), and he chose Georgia over Miami and other suitors. After redshirting his first year, Robinson became a starter last season and earned Freshman All-America honors with a team-best 11 passes defended and four interceptions.Georgia had a four-year streak of producing a top-15 draft pick snapped this past April, but Robinson can get the Bulldogs back into the top half of Round 1.Photo:Todd Kirkland / Getty ImagesCBR-So.The top high school recruit in Mississippi three years ago, Echoles separated himself as the top defensive player at Ole Miss last season. His impact consistently showed on the 2025 tape, as well as on the stat sheet.Echoles has a natural feel for the game and uses his physical traits to put himself in position to make plays. His disruptive and diverse skill set reminds me of Derrick Harmon, the 21st pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.Photo:Jamie Squire / Getty ImagesDTJr.Lauck redshirted in 2023 and saw minimal action in 2024, which made him somewhat of an unknown going into the 2025 season. But even on a veteran Iowa offensive line, Lauck was able to stand out with his impressive play at left tackle last season.Iowa, deservedly, won the Joe Moore Award in 2025 as college football’s top offensive line. Three of its starters (Logan Jones, Gennings Dunker, Beau Stephens) were drafted in April, but the two returning starters (Lauck and Kade Pieper) are potential top-50 picks in the 2027 class.Photo:Zach Boyden-Holmes / The Register / USA Today Network via Imagn ImagesOTR-Jr.The consensus No. 1 offensive tackle in the 2024 recruiting class, Seaton started from day one in Boulder and “protected” Shedeur Sanders’ blindside as a freshman — I use quotations there because it was a rocky first year. After performing better over his nine games as a sophomore, Seaton jumped into the portal.With uncommon movement ability for his size, Seaton has the talent and promise to be No. 1 on this list, but he must improve the technical and communication issues that have plagued him over his first two seasons. Clemson pass rusher Will Heldt will be a great test for him in Week 1, which will be Seaton’s debut in Tiger Stadium.Photo:Andrew Wevers / Getty ImagesOTJr.Bolden was the top-ranked safety recruit in the country and initially committed to Florida State before flipping to Georgia. He played a pivotal role in Kirby Smart’s secondary rotation as a freshman and created immediate buzz as a player to watch.Bolden was an enjoyable study on film because he is a very well-rounded football player. He is an outstanding athlete, but his football intelligence and competitive toughness are equally impressive. Bolden learned from Malaki Starks, the 27th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He has the ingredients to be drafted even higher.Photo:Kevin C. Cox / Getty ImagesSJr.After a nondescript freshman season with Missouri, he hopped into the portal and ended up with the Rebels, for whom he finished top three in the FBS in rushing yards (1,567) and rushing touchdowns (24).The NFL desires several different qualities at the running back position, but above all, the league covets ball carriers who create explosive plays. Lacy (who turned 20 this summer) is arguably the most explosive back in college football. The four-star recruit was one of the top players in Louisville’s 2023 class, although he collected only 13 catches over two years with the Cardinals (redshirted in 2023, season-ending injury in 2024). Johnson transferred to Oregon before the 2025 season and quickly put himself on the NFL radar.Johnson doesn’t have the speed or explosiveness of Sadiq, but he is a dependable target with his route stems and ball skills (only two drops in 2025). He can be the type of weapon that earns first-round consideration on draft weekend.Photo:Tom Hauck / Getty ImagesTER-Jr.Based on summer scouting, Brown is the clear LB1 entering the 2026 season. A Butkus Award winner in high school, Brown was a hot commodity as a recruit. He quickly lived up to the hype as ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2024, then led the Tigers in tackles (107) as a sophomore, earning first-team All-ACC honors.Brown is a big-time athlete, and that will always be his foundation as a player, but his tackling technique, diagnose skills and motor are all strengths, as well — and they’re continuing to get better. After redshirting in 2024, he became a starter early in 2025 and quickly separated himself as one of the emerging players on the Irish defense.Johnson missed time due to injury each of his first two years in South Bend, but the hope is he’ll stay healthy in 2026. If he does, he has All-America and first-round potential.Photo:Trevor Ruszkowski / Imagn ImagesSR-So.Hampton first landed on my radar during his freshman season, while I was studying Clemson’s 2024 tape against Virginia Tech. Playing tight man-to-man on the outside, he snagged a one-handed interception that made me sit up in my seat. Recruited as more of an “athlete” out of high school, some thought Hampton might stay on offense as a wide receiver or move to safety, but he found his home at corner.Since 2020, Clemson has produced four cornerbacks drafted in the top 50. With his length and his explosive skill set, Hampton should be next.Photo:David Jensen / Getty ImagesCBJr.“Wait, who is No. 9?!”That question appeared in my notes for CJ Allen while studying Georgia’s 2025 defense because Cole frequently flashed on each tape. Cole was a five-star high school recruit and earned SEC All-Freshman honors in his first year in Athens. Despite being a reserve last year as a sophomore, he still led the Bulldogs in sacks (4.5) while finishing fourth in tackles (59).Kirby Smart has sent several productive linebackers to the next level, and Cole should be next. NFL teams covet his long, athletic do-everything skill set at the position.Photo:Dale Zanine / Imagn ImagesLBJr.Washington quickly moved from “unproven” to “asset” in 2025, and his flashes of talent are why he starts the season as my top-ranked senior at the position.Can he take that next step in his senior year and be more of an impactful presence? Last season, he finished with just 4.5 tackles for loss, including 1.5 against FCS Montana State in the season opener. The tape and traits matter much more for his NFL evaluation as stats can be misleading, but his efficiency and consistency could determine if he is a slam-dunk top-25 pick or more of a top-50 selection.Photo:Todd Kirkland / Getty ImagesDTSr.Johnson is one of the few players in college football with experience at all five spots on the offensive line. After starting at center as a sophomore in 2024, he moved to left guard last season, plus filled in at left and right tackle when needed, earning All-Big Ten honors.Johnson plays with the size, toughness and intelligence coveted at the next level. If he shows continued technical refinement with his hand strikes as a senior, he will be in the conversation to be one of the first interior lineman drafted.Photo:Mark J. Rebilas / Imagn ImagesGSr.Scott was considered the top defensive tackle (and one of the top 10 recruits overall) in the 2024 recruiting class.Is Scott still learning how to streamline his immense talent into more consistent production? No question. But the NFL salivates for explosive big-man traits — and Scott has those to offer. It won’t be surprising at all to see his disruptive ability warrant first-round consideration with another year of starting experience.Photo:Samuel Lewis / Icon Sportswire via Getty ImagesDTJr.A three-star “athlete” out of high school, Baugh eventually became Florida’s lead back as a true freshman and played like one of the top backs in the country as a sophomore last season.Baugh is a uniquely gifted runner. His cutting athleticism, contact balance and proximity awareness are outstanding, and his pass-catching and blocking skills also play in his favor. He caught 33 passes without a drop last season — some rudimentary dump-offs, but also several targets away from the line of scrimmage (see his wheel route touchdown versus Tennessee).Photo:Scott Wachter / Getty ImagesRBJr.After redshirting in 2024, Carr won the Irish starting job last season and almost immediately looked like he belonged. He finished with a 24-to-6 touchdown-to-interception ratio and helped Notre Dame finish the regular season with 10 straight wins.Carr has good but not remarkable physical traits for the position, which is why some NFL scouts question his long-term ceiling while still liking his foundation. Notre Dame understandably relied on the run game last season (Carr ranked 84th in the FBS in pass attempts), but with running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price now in the NFL, more will be on the quarterback’s shoulders in 2026.Photo:Justin Casterline / Getty ImagesQBR-So.Iowa had three offensive linemen drafted in the top 150 this past April, but an argument could be made that its two other 2025 starters (Pieper and Trevor Lauck) are even better NFL prospects. Pieper became a starter last season and immediately stood out on a veteran offensive line, earning All-Big Ten honors at right guard.Pieper moved from guard to center during 2026 spring practices, so he will look to follow in the footsteps of Linderbaum and Jones by becoming a top-60 pick. A lowly ranked high school recruit, McClain proved to be a valuable depth piece as a freshman before becoming a starting safety alongside Caleb Downs last season.With the Buckeyes having to replace impact defenders including Downs, Arvell Reese and Sonny Styles, Matt Patricia’s squad will understandably take a step back in 2026. But it will be a great opportunity for new impact players to emerge — McClain is at the top of the list.Photo:Jason Mowry / Getty ImagesSJr.How do you properly rank a unique prospect like Mestemaker? His raw talent is incredibly enticing, but there is no substitute for experience at quarterback. Mestemaker was an all-district performer in high school — but at safety and punter. He was the backup quarterback, even as a junior and senior.Given his lack of experience, Mestemaker is a more realistic option for the 2028 NFL Draft. But he is draft-eligible now, and the buzz among NFL teams shouldn’t be ignored. I am eager to see his development against better competition, especially when Oregon visits Stillwater in Week 2.Photo:Bryan Terry / The Oklahoman / USA Today Network via Imagn ImagesQBR-So.He doesn’t have the speed of Lacy or even Baugh, but he led the SEC in carries of 10-plus yards (43) and 20-plus yards (17) last season, as he relied on his tempo and tackle-breaking skills to create chunk plays in the Tigers’ outside zone scheme. Although not a one-to-one comparison, some of his runs give flashbacks of Nick Chubb because of his contact balance.There isn’t a massive gap between the first three backs on this list. However, Hardy’s outlook for the 2026 season is somewhat uncertain after he was shot in the leg at a concert in May. He underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, but his full recovery timeline is unknown.Photo:Ed Zurga / Getty ImagesRBJr.One of the highest-recruited defensive tackles in the 2024 class, Stone returned home to the Sooner state after prepping at IMG Academy in Florida. After seeing limited action as a freshman, he was part of Oklahoma’s deep defensive line rotation last season as a sophomore, starting twice and averaging 33 snaps per game.Stone is one of the more intriguing “wait and see” draft-eligible prospects in the country. It is fair to project a jump in his on-field impact this season, but how much of one? He has dominant potential.Photo:Mark J. Rebilas / Imagn ImagesDTJr.Recruited as an athlete, the Waco native arrived at Texas and stayed in the secondary, where he worked himself into the rotation as a redshirt freshman. McDonald became a full-time starter last season and responded by emerging as one of the SEC’s top safeties.My top-ranked senior prospect at his position, McDonald has the movement skills of a cornerback but the mentality and reliable tackling of a safety. The Longhorns are young in the secondary, but they have a safety with the talent to compete for a spot in the top 60 next April.Photo:Scott Wachter / Getty Images for ONITSSr.Marsh arrived in Bloomington after two seasons at Michigan State, where he led the Spartans in receiving yards both years.With his frame and physicality, Marsh can play the Elijah Sarratt role in Indiana's offense on some plays (slants, back shoulders) and the Omar Cooper Jr. role (crossers, broken tackles) on others. He also can get vertical and use his adjustment skills to keep defenders from sitting on short targets. It will be interesting to track the chemistry between Marsh and quarterback Josh Hoover, two transfers who will need to adapt quickly.Photo:Justin Casterline / Getty Images for ONITWRJr.Prior to the 2025 season, Chambliss transferred to Ole Miss with the expectation of being the backup behind Austin Simmons. However, Simmons injured his ankle in Week 2 — Chambliss grabbed his opportunity and didn’t look back. He became SEC Newcomer of the Year and led the Rebels to a 13-2 season, including two wins in the College Football Playoff.Chambliss has gone from fun story to a legitimate NFL prospect who will test the comfort levels of scouts to think outside the box. He will be a 25-year-old rookie; he stands under six feet tall; not everything on his college tape will translate cleanly to the NFL. But there is a place at the next level for an instinctive playmaker like him.Photo:Justin Ford / Getty ImagesQBSixth-year Sr.A three-star recruit, Benefield passed on offers from BYU and Washington to sign with Boise State, where he became an immediate starter as a freshman. He earned honorable mention All-Mountain West as a sophomore and had his most productive season last year.Benefield would have been considered a Day 2 prospect had he declared for the 2026 NFL Draft, but he tested the portal waters instead. He signed a lucrative deal with LSU and quickly created buzz in Baton Rouge this spring for his work ethic and impact in practice.Photo:Tyler McFarland / Getty ImagesSSr.Sellers put himself on the NFL radar in 2024 with a standout redshirt freshman season, creating buzz among scouts that he could be a future high draft pick. His play fell short of those expectations last season, although the Gamecocks’ play calling, offensive line and receivers did their quarterback few favors.If Sellers struggles in 2026, it will be hard for NFL teams to buy him as an early-round option and future starter. But any degree of on-field progress and consistency will give them optimism that he is on the right track and there is more to be cultivated, which could land him in the first round.Photo:Jacob Kupferman / Getty ImagesQBR-Jr.After two standout seasons with Purdue, Heldt entered the transfer portal and was heavily recruited by programs including LSU and Texas A&M before choosing Clemson. Last season, his first with the Tigers, Heldt led the team in tackles for loss (15.5) and sacks (7.5).A stand-up edge rusher, Heldt was the most consistent part of the Tigers’ defensive line in 2025, and that should continue in 2026. Scouts are eager to see his battle against LSU’s Jordan Seaton in Baton Rouge in the season opener.Photo:David Jensen / Getty ImagesEdgeSr.Undersized in high school, Knapp wasn’t a sky-high recruit (No. 26 offensive tackle in the 2024 class). Despite being unheralded when he arrived in South Bend, Knapp went to work and surprised many by earning the starting left tackle job from day one of the '24 season.Over two years with the Irish, Knapp has only played left tackle (27 starts) but is expected to move to guard for the 2026 season, which is the best plan for both the short and long term. Although he still needs to put strong play on tape at his new position, Knapp has the core strength and competitive toughness that should translate well and make him a candidate to potentially enter the 2027 NFL Draft.Photo:John Mersits / Cal Sport Media via Associated Press ImagesGJr.A top-100 recruit out of high school, Jackson teased his talent over his first three years in Columbus before becoming a starter last season and emerging as one of the top defensive linemen in the Big Ten. Jackson was considered a potential first-rounder in 2026, but he surprised some by returning to Ohio State.The lone returning starter on Ohio State’s defensive line, Jackson will need to provide a veteran presence and build on his improvements from last year for the Buckeyes to again be dominant on that side of the ball.Photo:Luke Hales / Getty ImagesEdgeR-Sr.Some scouts see Mensah as a future NFL starter because of his quick release and passing instincts; others aren’t sold that he has a starter-level ceiling because of his only-adequate physical traits (size, arm, speed) and see him as a Day 3 prospect.However, between the returning talent at Miami and a manageable schedule, the stage is set for Mensah to have a Heisman-worthy season.Photo:Bob Donnan / Imagn ImagesQBR-Jr.Jones was a quarterback and defensive back in high school, but he arrived in Starkville as more of a raw athlete. After redshirting in 2023 and working his way into the cornerback rotation in 2024, Jones had his breakout last season as an All-SEC performer (13 passes defended and a pair of interceptions).Similar in stature to Riq Woolen, Jones has a rare 6-4 frame for a cornerback, with the length and speed to suffocate receivers. Based on traits alone, he is a potential Day 2 (Rounds 2-3) prospect. He compiled 32 starts over four years with the Wolfpack and entered the transfer portal ahead of his final year of eligibility.Anyone who watched South Carolina in 2025 was begging the program to find upgrades on its offensive line. The Gamecocks aggressively ventured into the portal market and signed Peak, the No. 5 player available, according to 24/7 Sports. Unfortunately, he suffered a spinal contusion on a punt return and missed the final six games of his sophomore year. He returned healthy this past spring, and all signs point to him being full-go in 2026.I gave Wesco on several other receivers the edge because of his speed. The son of two college track athletes, he is one of the most gifted wide receivers in college football and will be in the early-round discussion if he can continue adding bulk and play strength.Photo:Kevin C. Last season, he moved to left tackle and filled a major need.With four returning, quality starters, Ohio State’s offensive line should be a strength — and Siereveld might be the best of the group (although Luke Montgomery has a case). The main question: Where will he play? However, he gradually improved over his first few years and enjoyed a breakout redshirt junior season . Though he didn’t receive as much praise as Miami’s edge rushers, Moten was a disruptive part of the Hurricanes’ path to the national title game.After his strong finish to the 2025 season, some scouts expected him to go pro, but he returned to Miami for his fifth season.
