And the 2027 draft class has a maestro at the top, followed by a few others with the talent to be drafted in the top half of the first round.I cannot wait to see how this cornerback class develops. It should be one of the strengths of the 2027 class.(Notes: An asterisk represents draft-eligible underclassmen. Heights and weights are what NFL teams currently have on file for each player, per league sources.)1. Leonard Moore, Notre Dame (6-2, 197 pounds)*Best trait: Route instinctsMoore sticks to receivers like Velcro. He is a tall, long and physical presence with clean movement skills, especially for his size. Moore’s route instincts, however, are what separates him from most corners. He understands offensive tendencies based on situations and tells, which allows him to run better routes than receivers do and put himself in position to make plays on the ball.It is fun to watch Moore’s mind work on the field. He was outstanding on multiple 2025 tapes — games against Texas A&M, Boise State and USC immediately come to mind. But Moore was at his most dominant against Stanford, showcasing his route anticipation and poised cover skills.Leonard Moore vs. StanfordDane BruglerMust improve: Upright play styleLike Sauce Gardner, Moore is a loose athlete who doesn’t allow his height to restrict his mobility. But there are examples of plays where he would benefit from better sink to aid his transitions. His upright style also affects his tackling. While he is more than willing to throw his body around, Moore could use more consistent pad level, especially when working downhill against running backs.2027 NFL Draft outlookBased on summer scouting, Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith is the best draft-eligible prospect in the 2027 class. Moore might be second.The Round Rock, Texas, native became a starter as a freshman and quickly put himself on the NFL radar. With five interceptions and 12 passes defended over 10 games in 2025, Moore emerged as a consensus All-American and will enter his third season as arguably the best defensive player in college football.Moore thrives on an island. According to PFF, he lined up in man coverage on 57.6 percent of his defensive snaps in 2025, the highest rate in the FBS. He is a long, smooth athlete who processes confidently and decisively to stay a step ahead of the action. He lines up primarily outside, but he had no trouble moving inside to shadow former USC standout receiver Makai Lemon. Moore brings consistency to a position that is inherently volatile.2. Ellis Robinson IV, Georgia (6-0, 180)*Best trait: Ability to turn, run and defendRobinson isn’t a one-trick pony in coverage — he is equally comfortable reacting in zone and man schemes. But I was particularly impressed by his man-to-man skills on the outside, where he was able to pedal, flip his hips and find the football.Throw on the tape of Georgia’s SEC Championship win over Alabama, and you’ll see it when he’s defending Germie Bernard. Or against Cam Coleman on the Auburn tape. Or versus Deuce Alexander on the Ole Miss tape. Or against in-state rival Georgia Tech in the clip below. It was a common theme for the Georgia defense.Ellis Robinson IV vs. Georgia TechMust improve: Experience levelAs a first-year starter in 2025, Robinson made his share of mistakes, which was to be expected. At times, he would take a false step at the snap, be late to read a route or make early contact with receivers downfield, especially toward the beginning of the season (see the Tennessee tape). But it was encouraging to watch Robinson develop and gain confidence with each game.2027 NFL Draft outlookEvery college program in the country wanted Robinson out of high school. After prepping at IMG Academy, he was the No. 2 recruit in the 2024 class (behind only Smith), and he chose Georgia over Miami and other suitors. After redshirting his first year, Robinson became a starter last season and earned Freshman All-America honors with a team-best 11 passes defended and four interceptions.Georgia had a four-year streak of producing a top-15 draft pick snapped this past April, but Robinson can get the Bulldogs back into the top half of Round 1.3. Ashton Hampton, Clemson (6-3, 204)*Best trait: Eager, disruptive handsHampton is a big athlete who is as physical as he is explosive. That’s a good starting point for a cornerback prospect. He is at his best near the line of scrimmage, where he can unlock and drive in the quick game or ride receivers from press man, using his violent hands to reroute his opponent.Although he doesn’t get credit in the box score for this turnover, Hampton created the interception using forceful hands to overwhelm the receiver early and disrupt the catch point.Ashton Hampton vs. South CarolinaDane BruglerMust improve: Grabby tendenciesHis eagerness to get hands on receivers is among his strengths, but that means Hampton must walk a fine line to avoid penalties. He will need to adjust to NFL receivers, who will force him to use his handsy play style as more of a crutch to stay connected.2027 NFL Draft outlookHampton first landed on my radar during his freshman season, while I was studying Clemson’s 2024 tape against Virginia Tech. Playing tight man-to-man on the outside, he snagged a one-handed interception that made me sit up in my seat. Recruited as more of an “athlete” out of high school, some thought Hampton might stay on offense as a wide receiver or move to safety, but he found his home at corner.Since 2020, Clemson has produced four cornerbacks drafted in the top 50. With his length and his explosive skill set, Hampton should be next.4. Kelley Jones, Mississippi State (6-4, 196)*Best trait: Blankets receivers with lengthIt was difficult to find catches against Jones on tape. He allowed a meager 28.9 percent completion rate last season (11 catches on 38 targets), which ranked first among all FBS cornerbacks. The key to Jones’ success: His rangy body, which helps him overwhelm receivers early and erase catch windows downfield. His size and grit are also assets against the run game — this is a tough-minded football player.In the video below, Jones put himself in prime position to defend KC Concepcion’s goal-line fade in the Bulldogs’ October 2025 loss at Texas A&M.Kelley Jones vs. Texas A&MDane BruglerMust improve: Anticipating route breaksJones’ speed and length create staggering matchup advantages when he stays in position. But savvy receivers can get him leaning before separating out of breaks. Earlier on that Texas A&M tape, Concepcion created space from Jones on a post-corner concept, which allowed the Aggies’ quarterback time to find his receiver before Jones could recover. The result was six points for the Aggies (one of only three touchdowns Jones allowed in 2025).2027 NFL Draft outlookA native of Clarksdale, Miss., Jones was a quarterback and defensive back in high school, but he arrived in Starkville as more of a raw athlete. After redshirting in 2023 and working his way into the cornerback rotation in 2024, Jones had his breakout last season as an All-SEC performer (13 passes defended and a pair of interceptions).Similar in stature to Riq Woolen, Jones has a rare 6-4 frame for a cornerback, with the length and speed to suffocate receivers. Based on traits alone, he is a potential Day 2 (Rounds 2-3) prospect. If he continues to improve in 2026, however, he could put himself in the first round next April.5. Vicari Swain, South Carolina (6-0, 190)*Best traits: Speed and poise downfieldSwain is one of the top punt returners in college football, and that speed and explosiveness translate to cornerback, as well. But I was even more impressed with his composure downfield to crowd the catch point and get his hands on the football.On the Alabama tape, Swain, who was frequently tasked with covering Bernard, was targeted eight times by quarterback Ty Simpson. However, he allowed just three catches for 11 yards in that game, and shut down a few downfield attempts.Vicari Swain vs. AlabamDane BruglerMust improve: Spacing in off coverageWith his athletic traits, Swain has the movement skills that NFL teams covet, and he puts himself in position to make plays downfield. But his technical know-how and feel for underneath and zone spacing are still developing. Evaluators are eager to see if his coverage consistency expands alongside his role in 2026.2027 NFL Draft outlookRecruited as an athlete out of high school, Swain became a full-time defender with the Gamecocks, and his playing time has increased steadily each year. Despite not starting last season as a redshirt sophomore, he played almost an identical number of snaps as Brandon Cisse (drafted No. 52 by the Green Bay Packers) and was a valuable part of the team’s defensive back rotation.He’s also dynamic on special teams — Swain tied for the FBS lead with three punt return touchdowns in 2025. Though still raw in some aspects of cornerback play, Swain has an impressive combination of size and speed, with natural ball instincts and plenty of promise.Top 25 senior cornerback prospects:1.
