APM Terminals has not provided details on the batteries, charging infrastructure or performance of the new terminal tractors. It has also not disclosed the order value or when the 96 trucks will enter service.
Orange EV builds its Class 8 electric terminal tractors in Kansas City and supplies the vehicles together with charging and servicing solutions. The manufacturer says its electric trucks have so far covered more than 36 million miles (58 million kilometres) and accumulated 14 million operating hours in the US, Canada and the Caribbean. And this is not its first deal with APM Terminal. Last year, the latter ordered 10 electric terminal tractors (ETTs) for the Port of Los Angeles from Orange EV.
The 34 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (E-RTGs) will come from Finnish crane manufacturer Konecranes, which has supplied equipment to the Elizabeth terminal for more than 20 years. According to Konecranes, some of the cranes delivered at the beginning of that relationship are still in daily use.
Elizabeth is one of the largest container terminals in the Port of New York and New Jersey and handles around 28 per cent of the port’s container throughput. More than 600 vessels call at the terminal each year, while it records around 800,000 truck visits annually.
