(Yonhap) A police officer accused of falsely closing two missing-person cases on Jeju Island denied the allegations Wednesday, a day after he was detained under an arrest warrant.According to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency, the 35-year-old officer, identified by his surname Bu, maintains that he had contacted the two missing people before closing the cases.Police have so far been unable to find records showing that Bu had contacted either of the two missing people.Bu is being investigated over two separate cases involving a 37-year-old woman, Jang Mi-ran, and a man in his 60s. Both were later found dead in western Jeju in August.When Jang and the man were reported missing in May and July, respectively, Bu told their families that he had contacted them and that they did not want to remain in contact with their families.He subsequently closed the cases and removed them from the missing-person profiling system.After police resumed searches for them on Aug. 20, the man was found dead on Saturday and Jang was found dead on Monday. The discoveries have raised concerns that Bu's alleged false reports may have delayed efforts to locate the two missing people.Bu was detained late Tuesday afternoon after the Jeju District Court issued an arrest warrant for him. He faces charges including dereliction of duty, falsifying and using public electronic records, and obstruction of official duties by deception.Meanwhile, police are conducting a full review of the 298 missing-person cases Bu closed during the past 17 months.
