AC Milan coach Ruben Amorim has backed Samuel Chukwueze and new signing Diego Moreira to battle for a starting spot at AC Milan, while suggesting the Nigerian could have a key role to play as a wing-back this season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Moreira joined Milan for €50m and was expected to compete for a starting place, but Amorim believes the Portugal international’s versatility could see him deployed in different positions.

The Milan coach also believes Chukwueze’s unique qualities make him difficult to replace, with the pair set to compete for the position while occasionally featuring together.

“Moreira can play as a full-back on either the right or left; perhaps he’ll play more on the right. At a big club, it’s important to have two excellent players in each position. Moreira and Chukwueze have important characteristics that are difficult to find in a single player,” Amorim said, according to MilanNews.

“If Chukwueze isn’t available, we need a player with the same characteristics so the team doesn’t suffer too much. Saelemaekers wants to get inside the pitch; he has a different game. They’ll play together sometimes, but overall they’ll fight for the position.” Related News Moffi begins Hamburg training as club chief hails Nigerian Awoniyi opens Coventry goal account Amusan makes Diamond League return in Zurich
