As he campaigned to become the MP for Makerfield, Andy Burnham said he wanted £39 billion earmarked for new housing to be “dedicated to council homes”.

On entering Number Ten, he promised the “biggest council housebuilding drive since the postwar period.” But today he’s been accused of watering down his ambition.

Announcing the first allocation of money from that £39 billion pot, the government said that at least 60% would be for social rent.
