Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says his quick recovery from knee surgery has gone according to plan as he prepares to start Week 1 against the Denver Broncos.Mahomes, who was fully cleared to participate in practices at the start of training camp, hasn’t missed any practice and also has been in on every scheduled first-team rep.“This has always been the plan: be ready for training camp, get all the reps in training camp, prepare your body that way,” Mahomes said Tuesday, “so that when we get to Week 1, you’re ready to play the game and you’ve had the right amount of time off.”The Chiefs still have nearly three weeks before their opener on Sept. 14. At this point, Mahomes says he feels prepared for the grind of the season, especially after going through coach Andy Reid’s demanding training camp in St. Joseph, Mo.“I didn’t know if I was going to have to take days off and stuff like that,” Mahomes said, “but my body’s responded the right way.”My biggest takeaway from Chiefs training campJesse NewellSince the team returned to practices in Kansas City this week, Mahomes said the only change to his schedule was to get to the facility earlier in the mornings for his rehab work. He also has treatment sessions before and after meetings, and has sprinkled in his normal preseason workout sessions with personal trainer Bobby Stroupe.“As long as I can continue to go out there and feel good and trust my body and be able to go out there and be myself,” Mahomes said, “I think I’m gonna be good to go.”It will be an impressive feat if Mahomes can take the field in Week 1. That Sept. 14 date will be almost exactly nine months after Mahomes’s knee surgery on Dec. 15.Chiefs coaches and front-office personnel alike have lauded Mahomes this offseason for his dedication to getting treatment nearly every day at the team facility.“I’m someone that, if you put something out in front of me, I want to go out and get it,” Mahomes said. “I want to go out and maximize every single opportunity, every rep in the weight room, every hour that I can spend in the building to get my body right.”Regarding practices, Mahomes says he’s mostly felt like himself with the knee, with stiffness worsening after he takes a few days off. He’s learned since then to add mobility exercises on those planned off days to remain more limber. He’s also tried to avoid making hard cuts on his knee in practice but says his instincts often take over.“I haven’t had any hesitancy throughout the plays. It’s the coaches talking to me after and telling me, ‘We’re just practicing. It’s not a real live game,’’ Mahomes said with a smile. “Other than that, we’ve been good.”The Chiefs finish the preseason Friday with a home game against the Seattle Seahawks. Mahomes isn’t expected to play. That doesn’t shift the overall timeline. Mahomes, by his own acknowledgment, said the real target to return has always been Sept. 14.“From the day I got the surgery as quick as I did, to hopefully the first game of the year, the plan will go accordingly,” Mahomes said, “and I’ll be able to go out there and be myself.”
