Freedom was ejected from the Indiana Fever vs. Chicago Sky game Sunday night, with security escorting him out after he and Cloud got into a verbal altercation. How is that against any arena policy?”
The former NBA player recently inserted himself into the debate over whether biological males who identify as women should be allowed to compete in women’s sports such as the WNBA. Freedom outwardly declared for the WNBA draft, citing ambiguity in the eligibility rules over who can be classified as a woman. The league has not yet publicly commented on whether Freedom would be considered as a draft prospect.
Freedom described the moments leading up to being kicked out, where Cloud stormed up to him and began yelling. Freedom said he was just there to protect women, and was seen showing off his shirt as he left the arena.Meanwhile, a woman wearing a shirt in support of transgender athletes was seen on the jumbotron during a game in Atlanta, Concha said.Messages supporting transgender athletes were also shared within other arenas. For example, the New York Liberty displayed messages supporting transgender fans at the Barclays Center during their game against the Fever. The differing reactions from the league and arenas showed a stark contrast in the messages that were supported during WNBA games.The Fever have seen a large presence of protesters and counter protesters following remarks made by guard Sophie Cunningham, who said that biological males should not compete in women’s sports. Cunningham has inadvertently made herself a figurehead in the movement, pushing to prevent transgender women from competing against biological females.
