With an all-conquering podcast empire and a new deal that will make his football punditry show a regular fixture on Netflix, there seems little left for Gary Lineker to wish for.However, while the former Match of the Day presenter is full of praise for Alan Shearer and Micah Richards – the fellow pundits on his The Rest Is Football show – Lineker has admitted to admiring a combative figure playing for his main rivals.Asked which of the plethora of football pundits he would want to poach, Lineker admitted that Roy Keane’s brutal delivery and viral rants meant the former Manchester United captain would be his dream signing.“He’s box office,” Lineker said during an appearance at the Edinburgh TV festival, before joking that, analytically, the Irishman “doesn’t give you that much”.“He’s bloody good at being Roy Keane,” he said. “I’ve met Roy a few times. He’s really sweet … he just plays a character and he’s good at it. He’s really good at it, and he obviously knows his [stuff]. I was kidding about the analytical thing, a little bit.”Keane is a member of a podcast team that has emerged as Lineker’s main opposition – Gary Neville’s The Overlap operation, which includes the Stick to Football show. Soon after The Rest Is Football signed up with Netflix, Stick to Football announced a similar deal with Disney.While the rivalry is good natured, a tongue-in-cheek Lineker couldn’t help but add a slice of football needle, saying Keane “probably would” sign up for his show.“You’ve got Gary [Neville] and his team, you’ve got Piers Morgan and his team [making the World Cup Uncensored] show, and they’re just trying to copy,” Lineker joked. “They’re trailing in our wake and I wish them all the very best. There is room, particularly in football. There’s a lot of competition.”The deals bringing football podcasts to the world’s biggest streaming services are a sign of a thirst for sport content. Given the huge expense of live sporting rights, punditry has become a popular option.The Rest is Football appeared in Netflix’s daily top 10 charts on every day of its 40-day run of daily episodes filmed during the World Cup, and the US company has opted to continue their partnership during the domestic season.The Rest is Football obtained more than 7m monthly streams for its content alone last season, leading Lineker to joke that Neville’s outfit was “languishing miles behind”.Lineker was interviewed on stage about his transition from footballer to presenter to media mogul, as the co-founder of successful podcast stable, Goalhanger. During the appearance, he explained why he continued to speak out on political issues, particularly Gaza.In the last week, the Telegraph criticised him for reposting a video of Tony Greenstein, an anti-Zionist who was cleared last week of inviting support for Hamas.
