The lawmaker also raised concerns that the outbreak had returned after a similar incident reportedly claimed several lives in the area last year.

The Kano State House of Assembly has demanded urgent government intervention following a reported diphtheria outbreak in Rano Local Government Area, where lawmakers said more than 50 children have died from the disease.

The call followed a motion of urgent public importance raised by the member representing Rano Constituency, Ibrahim Muhammad, during plenary on Monday. Muhammad said the outbreak was particularly severe in the Ridin and Sabuwar Qaura communities, where the reported deaths occurred.

According to Tribune, Muhammad said emergency measures had already begun, including the provision of medication and the deployment of health workers to the affected communities.

He, however, urged Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Commissioner for Health to provide additional assistance to contain the outbreak.
