The police have arrested a Hyderabad-based burglar in connection with four house break-in cases reported under Station Bazaar Police limits in Kalaburagi and recovered gold and silver jewellery worth, in all, ₹13.40 lakh, Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa has said.The accused was identified as Mohammed Mujahid (also known as Javed), son of Mohammed Zafar, a resident of Hyderabad in Telangana.Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Dr. Sharanappa said that Mujahid was arrested following investigation of a complaint filed by Shivraj Avanti, a resident of Old Jewargi Road in the city.Mr. Avanti reported that unidentified people broke into his locked house on the night of January 21 and stole gold and silver ornaments valued at ₹66,000 and ₹16,000 in cash.During investigation, police traced Mujahid and and arrested him.During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to committing four house break-ins within the Station Bazaar Police limits.The police recovered 85 grams of gold ornaments valued at ₹12.75 lakh and 260 grams of silver ornaments valued at ₹65,000, taking the total value of the recovered jewellery to ₹13.40 lakh.The accused was produced before a court which sent him to judicial custody.Dr. Sharanappa said that Mujahid is a habitual offender with 10 cases, six in Hyderabad of Telangana and four in Kalaburagi, registered against him.Explaining his modus operandi, the Police Commissioner said that the accused used to recce residential areas and identify locked houses.He would then break into such houses during the night, steal valuables and return to Hyderabad after committing the offences.The accused operated single-handedly.The police have not found any evidence so far of an organised gang or an accomplice assisting him in the four house break-in cases in Kalaburagi, the Police Commissioner added.A team led by Station Bazaar Police Inspector G.M. Patil and Assistant Sub-Inspector Shivasharanappa successfully traced the accused and recovered the stolen property. Published - August 25, 2026 07:14 pm IST
