We’re in the seventh inning of the season, but a lot can still change. A savvy pickup can still make a big difference. Here are some players who could see their fortunes change in the final month, followed by some category-specific waiver-wire targets.BuyVinnie Pasquantino, 1B, KCEven with two weeks off due to a wrist injury, Pasquantino has been a different guy in the second half. His exit velocity is up over three ticks to 92.7 mph, and his slash line is .345/.424/.534 since the All-Star break. He won’t keep up this torrid pace, but given his track record, I’m inclined to think we’ll get something much closer to the guy people thought they were drafting after last year’s breakout. The season-long numbers could keep his price down for next year as well.Alejandro Kirk, C, TORKirk has been somewhat forgotten amid injuries and the Blue Jays’ rough season, but he’s back to hitting for an excellent average with decent power. He prioritizes solid contact over elevating the ball, which puts a ceiling on his homer output, but he’s a good source of average (especially for a catcher), runs and RBI.David Peterson, SP, CHCSince his meltdown in his second start as a Cub, Peterson has put up a 2.20 ERA with three wins in seven starts. There is some good fortune involved, but he’s a classic Cubs pairing of ground-ball pitcher and excellent infield defense. Expect more of a mid-3s ERA going forward.
