Authorities are investigating the death of painter and poet Christos Markidis, who was found at his downtown Athens home Monday. He was 72.

Markidis was found unresponsive after not being heard from for several days. Suicide has not been ruled out as a possible cause of death.

Hours before he was found, Markidis made a social media post quoting poet Nikos Karouzos on the “trap of existence,” alongside a poster for Ingmar Bergman’s psychological drama “Persona.” It is unclear whether the post was connected to his death.

Born in the northern city of Drama in 1954, Markidis studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts before spending time living and working in Paris.
