The researchers linked the signals to US thermonuclear testing at Bikini and Enewetak during Operations Castle, Redwing and Hardtack. As the researchers put it, “Each can be linked to thermonuclear testing” at Bikini and Enewetak.Operation Castle produced by far the strongest imprint. Six tests were conducted between late March and May 1954, with a combined yield of about 48.09 megatons. Three of the tests, Bravo, Romeo and Yankee, each exceeded 10 megatons. The later Redwing series involved 17 tests and a combined yield of about 20.8 megatons, while Hardtack I involved 31 successful tests with a combined yield of about 26.6 megatons. The latter two campaigns produced much smaller signals in the Guam coral, but they were still visible above the expected carbon-14 trend.The difference between the events is striking when the coral measurements are compared. As per NOAA, the first peak rose by roughly 700‰ above pre-bomb levels and remained elevated for about 1.2 years. The later peaks were much smaller, rising by approximately 35‰ and 70‰. Each could be linked to thermonuclear testing during the three operations. When scientists went back and sampled the relevant section at twice the original resolution, the peak was revised upwards to about 937.6 per mille, compared with the earlier value of 638.9 per mille. The higher-resolution peak occurred around September 1954.How nuclear fallout carried carbon-14 into Guam coralThe coral did not record an explosion directly. Instead, the signal was carried into the marine environment. The researchers proposed that the intense nuclear fireballs interacted with coral reef material and the surrounding atmosphere, producing conditions capable of adding carbon-14 to material that subsequently entered the ocean. Fallout particles and carbon-containing material could then become incorporated into seawater and, eventually, into growing coral skeletons.That distinction matters because ordinary bomb-produced carbon-14 in tropical seawater behaves differently. Atmospheric carbon-14 gradually enters the ocean through air-sea exchange, producing a broad signal that is delayed and weakened compared with the atmospheric record. The Guam coral contained that expected background pattern, but the three sharp rises sat on top of it. The unusually large 1954 peak therefore pointed towards a more direct source associated with fallout from the nearby Pacific Proving Grounds.The coral itself was a Porites lobata colony from Double Reef on Guam's north-western shore. The core was collected in April 2000 and measured 273 centimetres in length. Although it contained a record stretching back to 1787, scientists concentrated on the section covering 1939 to 2000, which included the period before atmospheric nuclear testing, the rapid rise in bomb-produced carbon-14 and the later decline.Guam coral reveals how nuclear fallout travelled 2,000 kilometres across the PacificThe distance between the testing grounds and Guam helped make the coral record particularly useful. Bikini and Enewetak lie roughly 2,000 kilometres east of Guam, and the North Equatorial Current provided a route for material from the testing region to move westwards. The researchers found that Guam was the only coral location in their comparison where all three testing operations could be separately resolved.The timing also fitted the movement of the ocean. The carbon-14 associated with Operation Castle took roughly three months to reach Guam, travelling from the test region at an estimated average current speed of about 0.2–0.3 metres per second. The Redwing signal took around five to six months, while Hardtack I took approximately four to five months. Their smaller peaks also faded more quickly.The study went beyond simply matching dates. The researchers used ocean-current modelling to simulate how fallout particles could have travelled through different layers of the upper ocean. For Operation Castle, the model produced an arrival time at Guam that closely matched the coral record. The earliest part of the simulated signal came from relatively shallow water, although more than 60 per cent of the modelled signal came from deeper strata between 41 and 121 metres.The trail did not necessarily stop at Guam. The strongest 1954 signal was also detected in coral records elsewhere in the Pacific and was used to trace how the material could have moved through regional currents. Palau, downstream from Guam, showed a comparable early signal, while later pathways extended towards other parts of the western Pacific and the Indonesian Throughflow.
