As part of strengthening the public distribution system in the Union Territory, the Puducherry government has plans to include more provision items for distribution through ration shops.Presenting the annual Budget in the Assembly, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said the government has proposed distribution of an “essential food kit” which would contain items, such as wheat flour, ragi flour, toor dal, sugar and ghee after suitably modifying the quantity of rice presently being supplied to ration cardholders. The scheme was being evolved with a plan to provide a more nutritious and balanced food basket to all ration cardholders in the Union Territory. The government also proposed to sell toor dal, urad dal, cooking oil, sugar and other essential commodities through fair price shops in Puducherry. Further more, small cost-price outlets will be set up at 10 key locations in Puducherry, the Chief Minister said. Published - August 24, 2026 09:06 pm IST
