Argentine football superstar Julián Álvarez was whistled off the field on Sunday after making his return for Atlético de Madrid following months of speculation over a possible move to FC Barcelona.

Álvarez, 26, has been publicly pushing for a transfer to the Catalan club since before the European football season hiatus for the 2026 World Cup.

The situation escalated rapidly, with Álvarez having previously refused to report to training. However, the move has yet to materialize, with the Colchoneros reportedly unwilling to sell to a rival Spanish club.

As such, when Atlético de Madrid hosted Villarreal on matchday 2 of the Spanish football league, Álvarez made his first appearance of the season for his club, coming off the bench to a barrage of whistles from the home fans.
