The Coimbatore Corporation has submitted a detailed project report (DPR) for a ₹73.05-crore project to strengthen and develop the banks of River Noyyal along a 4.30-km stretch within the city.The proposed works will cover both banks of the river between Aathupalam junction and Nanjundapuram bridge. The project is aimed at strengthening the riverbanks and developing public amenities along the stretch.According to the Corporation, the works will include a range of riverbank protection and beautification measures, including geocells, stepped gabion walls and retaining walls. A 1,270-metre-long retaining wall and a 660-metre-long stone masonry wall are also proposed.The project will also include a cycle track and walkway, parking facilities, gardens and green spaces, 50 stone seating areas and a 3,717 sq.m leisure space. About 11.75 km of fencing is proposed along the riverbank, along with safety bollards and revolving gates.Other proposed facilities include a 550 sq.m viewing deck, solar-powered lights and solar trees. Two steel bridges and two footbridges are also proposed at various locations.To prevent floating waste from entering the river, trash booms with a combined length of 420 metres will be installed at four locations. At the river entrance, tensile structures and other architectural features have also been proposed.The Corporation said it had conducted a drone survey of the entire 18.56-km stretch of the Noyyal river within its limits and demarcated the boundaries.As part of the riverfront development plan, parks and interpretative signage boards are proposed at locations including Azad Nagar, Pothanur Road (Itteri), Vellalore Road and Rajiv Gandhi Nagar.The DPR has been submitted to the Director of Municipal Administration for financial allocation and approval, the Corporation said.
