The Western Cape's Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU) is helping patients to quickly collect pre-packaged medication closer to home, and reducing congestion at health facilities.
The Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness’ Chronic Dispensing Unit (CDU) now processes about 2 million individual medicine items into 400,000 patient-specific parcels every month.
Through the CDU, an average of R42 million worth of medication a month is distributed to healthcare facilities and approved alternative collection points across the province.
By enabling stable patients to quickly collect pre-packaged medication closer to home, the CDU reduces facility congestion, allowing healthcare workers to focus on counseling, acute cases, and clinical care.
After prescription verification, the CDU packs individualised medications and distributes them to healthcare facilities and alternative collection sites, such as community centres, wellness hubs, and e-lockers.
