Ukrainian military intelligence recovered an Nvidia Jetson Orin NX computer module from the wreckage of a Russian S-71M “Monochrome” cruise missile, the agency announced on August 12. The module was produced in March 2025, more than three years after Nvidia formally exited direct operations in Russia.
What was found and why it matters
The Jetson Orin NX is an AI-focused system-on-module built for edge computing, packing 1,024 CUDA cores, 32 Tensor cores, and performance of up to 157 sparse INT8 TOPS. It is specifically designed to run machine learning models in compact devices, exactly the kind of thing you would want if you were trying to give a missile autonomous targeting capabilities.
Ukrainian officials identified the module through the marking SNVUP6.MOP TE980M-A1 and documented it through the War&Sanctions portal operated by Ukraine’s defense intelligence directorate. Alongside the Nvidia component, 35 other foreign electronic components were cataloged from various Russian weapon systems.
The S-71M Monochrome is an air-launched cruise missile with a range of roughly 300 kilometers and a payload capacity of 250 kilograms. Ukrainian officials have suggested it is designed for deployment from advanced platforms like the Su-57 fighter jet and the S-70 Okhotnik drone. Ukrainian officials have further suggested these Nvidia modules could enable computer vision and autonomous targeting, giving missiles the ability to identify and track targets without constant human guidance.
