Western Cape ranks second for hijackings in the country
The Western Cape recorded nearly 500 vehicle hijackings in the first three months of 2026, placing it second only to Gauteng despite an overall decline in cases across the country.
According to the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) fourth-quarter crime statistics for the 2025/26 financial year, 3609 vehicle hijackings were recorded nationally between January and March 2026.
This represented a 20.4% drop from the 4533 cases recorded during the same three-month period in 2025.
The Western Cape recorded 498 cases, down from 563 during January to March 2025, a decrease of 11.5%.
