Semi Ajayi admitted he was initially unsure whether he had scored Hull City’s historic opening goal in their stunning 2-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United on Saturday, as the Premier League returnees made a dream start to the 2-26/27 season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Ajayi reacted quickest to Oli McBurnie’s saved effort in the 17th minute, stabbing the rebound beyond the goalkeeper to put Hull ahead on their return to the Premier League.
The Nigerian defender’s effort ended Hull’s eight-year wait for a Premier League goal, with their previous top-flight strike coming in May 2017, when Sam Clucas scored in a 7-1 defeat to Tottenham.
It was also Ajayi’s first Premier League goal since January 2021, when he found the net for West Bromwich Albion against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
But the goal initially caused some confusion, with McBurnie celebrating as though he had scored after his first effort was saved.
