Sunday, August 23, is a pivotal moment for San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle. The 49ers announced they had activated Kittle from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform List. He took part in certain individual drills but wasn't participating in team drills, which is the right move, as slowly easing him back in makes sense. But prior to the 49ers activating him, Kittle had been doing solo drills away from the roster during training camp, so think of this as the next step. Why George Kittle shouldn't play Week 1 It’s absolutely admirable that Kittle is out there and looks to be in fine shape. But is he fully 100%? Or is he at 80% and just easing back into it? If he feels anything other than 100%, making the 16-hour flight to face the Los Angeles Rams at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Week 1 wouldn’t make any sense.Kittle’s rehab to be in this position has been nothing short of miraculous, and he deserves every bit of credit. But the last thing the 49ers need is a reinjury or a setback in his recovery.Jan 11, 2026; Philadelphia, PA, USA; San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle before action against the Philadelphia Eagles in an NFC Wild Card Round game at Lincoln Financial Field. As Kittle rightfully called playing in Australia a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, risking him in the season opener simply isn’t worth it if he’s not 100%. The recovery period between Week 1 and Week 2 provides the perfect buffer for Kittle to continue building himself back up and potentially be ready for San Francisco’s Week 2 game at Levi’s Stadium. Why George Kittle should play Week 1Every encouraging update makes it look more and more likely that Kittle will actually be 100% in time for the trip. The 49ers will be flying out on September 2, more than a week before the season opener. That gives Kittle additional time to prove he can handle an increased workload in practice before the team has to make a decision on his availability. If Kittle continues progressing without any setbacks and starts participating in team drills, then the conversation changes significantly. There would be far more reason for the 49ers to feel comfortable putting him on that flight.Nobody should expect the 49ers to take an unnecessary gamble, but if Kittle is genuinely 100% and receives full medical clearance, there’s little reason to hold him back from an opportunity he clearly wants to be part of.It's a tough choice to make.
