The South African women's hockey team finally got a taste of victory at the FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands on Sunday, with goals from skipper Edith Molikoe, Ntsopa Mokoena and Caylin Maree securing the 3-2 victory over Chile.
South Africa’s women finally had their breakthrough at the FIH Hockey World Cup on Sunday, fighting back to beat Chile 3-2 and claim their first victory of the tournament, while the men were held to a 3-3 draw by Malaysia.
The women’s win at the Wagener Hockey Stadium capped a much-improved showing in the 9th-16th classification phase and provided welcome reward after a difficult pool campaign against England, India and China.
Chile made the brighter start, with captain Manuela Urroz converting a penalty corner in the 13th minute to put the South Americans ahead.
South Africa responded through their own captain, Edith Molikoe, who produced an excellent piece of individual skill to win possession before finishing in the 22nd minute and sending the teams into half-time level at 1-1.
