Curtis Mead suffered a cruel fate in his very first game with the Boston Red Sox, but we still don't know just how cruel.After suffering a fractured wrist on a hit-by-pitch on July 28, Mead was quickly in a mindset where getting back to his new team before the end of the season would be a win. An injury obviously wasn't factored into the value proposition of trading Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals to get him, and more importantly, Boston was quickly without a big bat that was supposed to help the playoff run. Nearly a month later, we haven't heard much of an update on how quickly Mead has been recovering. According to a Sunday report, that moment of truth is fast approaching. "Curtis Mead will get a scan tomorrow to see how much his fractured left wrist has improved," wrote Browne early on Sunday afternoon. Mead, 25, was in the middle of a breakout season before the trade and injury. Though the Red Sox have gotten improved production from the second base position of late, there's a lot to be said for a guy with a 132 OPS+ being slotted into the lineup every day -- if that production can be counted upon this many weeks later. The roster mix is about to get highly complicated with the returns of Trevor Story and Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the 60-day injured list. Mead being inserted into the mix could necessitate designating one of those two for assignment, or else demoting Andruw Monasterio or Nick Sogard to Triple-A (neither deserves it). But you can't solve a tomorrow problem today, and roster crunches often work themselves out before a tough decision is needed. For now, Mead just needs to focus on getting back as quickly as he possibly can, and it seems as though Monday will be something of a pivotal moment in that storyline.
