Scott Taetsch / Getty ImagesJuly 28, 2026 Updated 7:39 pm EDTThe newest member of the Boston Red Sox, infielder Curtis Mead, is headed to the injured list with a broken left wrist, according to multiple reports.Mead, whom Boston acquired over the weekend in a trade with the Washington Nationals, was hit by a pitch in his second at-bat for the Red Sox on Monday in Sacramento against the Athletics. Although Mead remained in the game after taking a 95 mph fastball to the wrist in the fourth inning, he exited in the fifth and was replaced by Anthony Seigler.MLB.com reported that Mead, who underwent an MRI after waking up in discomfort, would see a specialist in Boston. “Super disappointing,” Mead told MLB.com.The Red Sox acquired Mead late Saturday night in exchange for left-hander Connelly Early in a move Boston hoped would bolster its lineup. Through 87 games with the Nationals, Mead had hit 17 homers while enjoying a breakout season at the plate.He had been expected to see most of his playing time at second base. In a corresponding move, the Red Sox recalled infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester. Sogard, along with Romy Gonzalez and Seigler, are expected to see time at second.Gonzalez was in the lineup and playing second base Tuesday.While it was not immediately clear how long Mead will be out, the injury is the latest blow to a Red Sox infield that already has Trevor Story (sports hernia), Marcelo Mayer (forearm stress reaction) and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (forearm stress reaction) on the injured list.Mead was supposed to boost the infield group, but how much he’ll be able to help down the stretch is now in question.The injury also figures to keep the Red Sox active on the trade market in seeking more infield help.
