Following increasing reports on health hazards from consumption of expired food, experts have stressed the need for consumers to check the expiry date of products before purchase.
Investigation reveals that most consumers do not check the manufacturing and expiry dates on the product they desire to purchase. This could be as a result of their ignorance of the health implications of consumption of expired products.
Expiry date of a product is the period up to which the food retains its nutrients stipulated on the label. That means, it is important to use that food before the expiry date so as to get the best of it and avoid poisoning.
According to health experts, consuming expired products which include, foods and drugs could cause food poisoning which if not well taken care of immediately could lead to death or serious illness.
It was against this background that Consumer Watch interviewed a cross-section of consumers to ascertain whether they check expiry dates or not.
