Pope Leo XIV has warned about the subtle forms of domination of technology following the global acceptance of artificial intelligence (AI).
He also underscored the rapid development of AI risks in creating new forms of technological dependence, with poorer nations increasingly reliant on wealthier ones.
“We must remain vigilant in this regard; lest innovation become another vehicle for ideological or economic colonialism,” Pope Leo stated on Friday during the International Catholic Legislators Network in the Vatican.
The Catholic pontiff stated that the world is daily presented with a subtle form of domination when algorithms decide who is seen, and who remains invisible. According to him, such developments reveal a new face of the ancient temptation to domination and mastery without service.
He also warned about allowing digital platforms to shape public discourse without accountability; adding that the dignity of workers must not be subordinated to the optimization of systems.
