Under the terms of the settlement, TikTok will pay $300million immediately, while an additional $100million will be paid upon the entry of an order vacating a prior consent decree entered against TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly.
.The United States Department of Justice has announced a $400 million settlement with TikTok, ByteDance and affiliated entities, resolving litigation over alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and its implementing regulations, known as COPPA.
Under the terms of the settlement, TikTok will pay $300million immediately, while an additional $100million will be paid upon the entry of an order vacating a prior consent decree entered against TikTok’s predecessor, Musical.ly.
The Justice Department said the settlement represents one of the largest recoveries ever obtained in a COPPA case, as the US government intensifies efforts to ensure that technology companies comply with laws designed to protect children’s personal information online.
“This settlement is a major victory for American children and parents,” said Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr.
