Former Minister and MLA Tanveer Sait on Saturday launched white-topping work on the 2.2-km stretch from Manipal Hospital Circle to Millennium Circle here.Speaking after launching the work, Mr. Sait said the State government had released funds through the Public Works Department (PWD) for white-topping 12 major roads in the city, considering the increasing volume of vehicular traffic.He said the foundation stone for the project had been laid earlier when Siddaramaiah was Chief Minister. Following the preparation of the technical report, works that can be completed before Dasara are being taken up. Three roads in the N.R. constituency are being developed under the project.The 2.2-km stretch from Manipal Hospital Circle to Millennium Circle would be completed before Dasara and opened to traffic, Mr. Sait said.A total of ₹121 crore has been earmarked for the white-topping works, while works costing ₹67 crore are being taken up initially. White-topping would enhance the durability of roads, reduce maintenance costs and improve the quality of traffic movement, he said.Mr. Sait said 12 major roads with heavy vehicular traffic in Mysuru had been identified for long-term development. White-topping is proposed for a total length of 46.088 km at a cost of ₹393.85 crore, with the works entrusted to the PWD.Mysuru, a major cultural, heritage and tourism centre, is gearing up for the world-famous Dasara festival. With lakhs of tourists expected to visit the city from across the country, traffic congestion is likely to increase. The white-topping works are aimed at improving road infrastructure ahead of the festival, he said.The project includes white-topping of the carriageway, installation of paver blocks along the roadsides to create buffer zones for future laying of underground drainage, water supply and electricity cables, development of footpaths, construction of RCC drains and culverts for the smooth discharge of rainwater, installation of traditional electric lights on road medians, and shifting of existing water supply and underground drainage pipelines wherever necessary.
