NEW YORK — Earlier this season, when rookie slugger Spencer Jones was at Triple A and making his case for another shot at the New York Yankees’ roster, a team decision-maker laid out to The Athletic why he continued to believe in Jones despite the peaks and valleys of his minor-league career. The decision-maker, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in exchange for his candor, explained that Jones had shown him — in offseason conversations and work during spring training — an outsized curiosity and willingness to learn. Especially for someone with Jones’ pedigree as a first-round pick in 2022 and with the hype he generated with his considerable power and athleticism. He believed Jones had displayed signs that he might one day control his 6-foot-7 frame at the plate, cut down on his strikeouts and more regularly tap into his potential — and that it could happen sooner rather than later.“He’ll try anything,” the decision-maker said.Jones might not have it all figured out just yet. But the 25-year-old seems to keep getting better and proving he maybe shouldn’t be sent down when regular left fielder Cody Bellinger returns from the injured list, which could happen as soon as Sunday.Jones blasted a towering home run — his second in two days — in a 3-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium on Friday night. The win was the Yankees’ fifth in a row, bringing them to three games behind the first-place Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East.“That’s what it’s all about,” Jones said. “What you want to do as a player is to be on a team that’s competing and help the team win as many games as possible.”
As Yankees’ Cody Bellinger nears return from IL, Spencer Jones should stay
The 6-foot-7 Jones hit his second homer in two games to continue a strong run at the plate, and the team is confident in his defense, too.
