CLEVELAND — Spencer Jones was crushed as he walked back into the clubhouse at Yankee Stadium. It was late at night on May 21, and Jones had just been demoted, ending his first stint in the majors after years of hard work and hype.In a matter of days, he would return to Triple A in sleepy Moosic, Pa., longing to be back in New York City.On the way back to his locker, the Yankees’ top outfield prospect was pulled aside by one of the few people whose job it is to inspire at such a low moment: Aaron Judge.“You’ve got the poise,” the captain told Jones. “You’ve got everything that we’re looking for with guys on the team. We believe in you. We’re going to need you this year. Stay ready.”It was just what Jones needed to hear.“It was one of those things where you have the captain of the team looking out for you,” Jones told The Athletic. “It was pretty sweet.”It was also the kind of message that Jones continued to lean on before he blasted his first career home run in a 3-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday night.Jones’ home run came in the second inning off starting pitcher Slade Cecconi and it was a no-doubter — 443 feet to straightaway center field at 112.2 mph. In a stroke of luck, the ball zoomed into the hedges behind the wall, and a Cleveland staffer was able to retrieve the keepsake. It sat in a ziplock bag in his locker after the game.“I’ll have one of the guys write it up for me and I’ll keep it safe,” Jones said.
