Hundreds of thousands of people remain on the housing register. Working families are being priced out. Young people cannot enter the housing market. People travel for hours because they cannot afford to live near work.

Earlier this week, at Century City, the City is bringing developers, financiers and housing players together to talk about investment and affordable housing.

Good. Cape Town needs investment. We need developers, banks, builders, social housing institutions, engineers, planners and capital.

But let us stop pretending that investment is the same as delivery.

After almost twenty years of DA government in Cape Town, the evidence is overwhelming: the city has not delivered social and affordable housing at the scale, speed, location or price required to change the lives of ordinary Capetonians.
