August 22, 2026 — 6:53pmA man was in police custody on Saturday evening after a mother of three, who was known to him, died in her home in Melbourne’s east on Friday.Annmarie O’Reilly was found critically injured inside her Ferntree Gully home. The 30-year-old woman, who police confirmed was an Irish national, was found injured at the property on Ferntree Gully Road, Ferntree Gully, about 10am.Emergency services were called to the house but were unable to revive the woman, identified by her family as Annmarie O’Reilly.A 45-year-old man was arrested nearby on Friday. Although he remained in custody on Saturday, no charges had been laid as homicide squad detectives continued to investigate.Police were still at the house on Saturday afternoon, with two blocks cordoned off from the public.Forensic teams were seen coming and going through the front door, which had three welcome home banners stuck to it.One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said it was “just awful”.“People think this kind of thing just happens in the outer suburbs, but it doesn’t, it’s happening everywhere,” she said.A bouquet of flowers was affixed in memoriam to a nearby telegraph pole.Start the day with a summary of the day’s most important and interesting stories, analysis and insights.
