Consumer companies rose, recouping some recent losses amid mixed earnings.

Shares of BJ's Wholesale rose after the warehouse retailer boosted its growth projection, with discounts on gas prices and groceries drawing more shoppers. Walmart was more or less flat after its lackluster earnings.

Rival Target rallied on hopes that it was picking up market share.
